WHY DOES SHE CRY?

Imagine what it's like, for a boy of just eight years
When he comes home from school, to find his mum in tears
He asks her what's the matter, why does she cry?
He doesn't understand, she offers no reply

Why mama why, why do you cry?
Tell me mama why, why does she cry?

She pulls him to her shoulder, the tears run down her face
His eyes begin to water, he wipes them on her lace
How can she break the news? How easy children bruise
What is it all about? She can't quite seem to get it out

Why mama why, why do you cry?
Tell me mama why, why does she cry?

Son... you know your daddy's dead
Did you hear what I said?
Son, you’re nearly grown up now
So save the tears and hide your fears and put this far behind
It's too late now, what's done is done, don't let this blow your mind

He died in action, died a fighting man
For Queen and country, he died to make a stand
His bravery wins medals for his wife
But medals don't, bring back his wasted life

Why did he have to go to war?
A piece of ground, was all the fighting for
And after all the bloody shooting's done
Who pays the price? His widow and his son
