Once upon a time in a barren place, a programme was begun
A very clever piece of engineering, a seed was set to run
A safe little haven in hostile space, meant to be good fun
This place was given everything, all that could be done

It would be a paradise, around a warming sun
With enough of all for everyone, you could want for none
Fuels and oils and materials, and oceans full of fish
Meat and fruit and vegetables, as much as you could wish

The engineer had a good heart, and wanted to do better still
He wanted to give them emotions and to give them all freewill
Now that’s a privileged place to be, but they did not appreciate
Bad attitude and greediness, led them all to hate

And when he saw what happened, the engineer was sad
For something had gone horribly wrong, his plans had all gone bad
The apex life could not respect, and abused their freewill
They used it to do bad things, and they used it to kill

They grouped themselves into little gangs, and robbed and raped and stole
They bullied their way around the globe, and pillaged from pole to pole
Taking what wasn’t theirs to take, interfering in others’ ways
They exploited the lands and the peoples, and set their homes ablaze

The little gangs became bigger gangs, and the problems got out of hand
The world was in a very dark place, as they argued over land
The world lived on the edge, of a nuclear holocaust
One idiot or lunatic and all would become lost

The engineer was unhappy, would he have to pull the plug?
The apex life was selfishly flawed and had turned into a thug
He had tried to show them, he’d tried to communicate
To show them how to love and to teach them not to hate

He put his messengers into the world to spread the word
To all the corners of the Earth, so everybody heard
But even that caused fighting, and still they went astray
They just couldn’t understand, but this is what he had to say

We have had enough of war, we’ve had enough of feeling sore
It never gets you anywhere, just heartbreak and despair
What is the fighting for? You couldn’t want for more
You have all that you need, there is no need for greed
You have to learn to share, you have to learn to be fair
This is a simple thing we ask, you can do this task
Care for everyone, as we have cared in all we’ve done (rpt)
You have the very best, so you can pass this test

If on this we can agree, you will always have the key
The key to all and everything, and all your dreams within
You ain’t seen nothing yet, and you will have no more regret
There is so much to see, in this eternity
You will never go without, of that there is no doubt
But you have to win your way, you must not go astray
You must be good in heart, and understand we’re all a part
